The shoe sole includes at least one compartment (188) containing a fluid, a flow regulator (140), a pressure sensor (104) to monitor the compartment pressure and a control system to automatically adjust the pressure in the compartment(s) (188) in response to the impact of the shoe sole with the ground surface (43).
