Abstract:
A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising an ion mobility separator, a mass filter disposed downstream of the ion mobility separator, an ion guide arranged downstream of the mass filter and an orthogonal Time of Flight mass analyser downstream of the ion guide. The ion guide comprises an ion funnel. An AC or RF voltage is applied to the electrodes of the ion guide to confine ions radially. The mass filter is arranged to progressively vary, increase or step a mass filtering characteristic of said mass filter during a cycle of ions emerging from the ion mobility separator such that ions having a first charge state are onwardly transmitted whereas ions having a second different charge state are substantially attenuated by the mass filter.
