Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system having backup bearings which are able to withstand an unassisted full speed spin down.SOLUTION: A high speed energy storage flywheel comprises a rotor (1), which is located in a vacuum chamber (3) provided in a stator housing (2) and is supported by magnetic bearings (5, 6, 7) with respect to the stator housing (2). A fluid tank (10) is used for releasing in a controlled manner a fluid into the vacuum chamber (3) and therefore creates a braking effect on the rotor by friction (1).
