Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2014176896
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of making a structure by welding and superplastic forming for materials such as aluminum unsuitable for diffusion bonding or brazing to produce sandwich structures from stacks of two or more worksheets.SOLUTION: A method comprises: assembling a plurality of workpieces comprising a first workpiece 12 including a first material having superplastic characteristics; ultrasonically welding the first workpiece to a second workpiece 14, to form an assembly 16; heating the assembly to a temperature at which the first material having superplastic characteristics is capable of superplastic deformation; and injecting a fluid between the first workpiece and the second workpiece to form a cavity between the first workpiece and the second workpiece.
