PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of improving use efficiency of illumination light.SOLUTION: A projector includes: a light source 2; a diffraction optical element 5 to which light L1 emitted from the light source 2 is made incident; a light modulation element 102 to which diffraction light L2 emitted from the diffraction optical element 5 is made incident; a first reflection element 21 that reflects light, of the diffraction light L2 emitted from the diffraction optical element 5, directed to an area outside an image forming area of the light modulation element 102; a second reflection element 22 that is arranged on the upstream side of the diffraction optical element 5 of the light L1 emitted from the light source 2, and reflects light Lr from the first reflection element 21; and a projection optical system that projects the light modulated by the light modulation element 102. The light Lr' emitted from the second reflection element 22 is made incident in the image forming area through the diffraction optical element 5.
