Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reducing environmental loads caused by mine wastes, which will, over time, react with water and atmospheric oxygen to create sulfuric acid and dissolved metals, and which is a problem known as Acid Rock Drainage or Acid Mine Drainage, thus contaminating waterways and groundwater, leaving a long-term environmental problem.SOLUTION: A process for stabilizing a sulfate- and/or sulfide-rich waste material (comprising metal sulfate and/or metal sulfide minerals) and sequestering CO, comprises: exposing the waste material to a CO-enriched gas mixture; reacting the CO-enriched gas mixture with the metal sulfate and/or metal sulfide minerals; and forming a CO-depleted gas mixture and a carbon-containing compound, and at least one product selected from the group consisting of a purified metal or a metal-rich compound suitable for smelting or refining, sulfuric acid, sulfur, and sulfurous acid. The present invention also provides a system and apparatus for the process.
