The manufacturing apparatus (1) has an elongated mandrel (3), around which a substrate sheet for the preparation of a pipe die (4) is formed, where the mandrel has multiple gas outlet openings for generating an air cushion between the mandrel and the pipe die. The gas outlet openings are provided at different axial positions along the axial extent of the mandrel.
