Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a buffer which incorporates a recoverable buffer element for absorption of normal low-speed impact and a non-recoverable buffer element capable of attenuating higher-speed impacts, and which is usable as a coupler without the need for major modification and is compact in length.SOLUTION: The buffer comprises: a first, elongate buffer element; and a second, elongate, hollow buffer element which is movably received within the interior of the first buffer element. The first and second buffer elements overlap over part of their length. At least the first buffer element is exposed at an end thereof for engagement with a respective, further member. The first and second buffer elements are moveable between an extended or intermediate configuration of the buffer and a compressed configuration of the buffer. Compression of the buffer more energetically than a threshold energy level causes the first buffer element to energize a non-recoverable energy absorbing member, thereby deforming one or more plastically deformable parts of the buffer.
