Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing a paint emulsion resin having a high solid content even when a monomer mixture having a high styrene-monomer content is emulsion-polymerized.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing a paint emulsion resin, which comprises: a pre-emulsion solution preparation step of preparing a pre-emulsion solution which contains a monomer mixture comprising 20-50 mass% of a styrene monomer (a) and 50-80 mass% of an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer (b) which is copolymerizable with (a); and an emulsion resin formation step of forming an emulsion resin by emulsion-polymerizing the monomer mixture, wherein the paint emulsion resin obtained by this production method has a number-average particle diameter of 500 nm or less and a solid concentration of 50 mass% or more, the α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer (b) contains a (meth)acrylic monomer (b1) having a monomer reactivity ratio r1 of 0.7 or less with respect to styrene, the content of the (meth)acrylic-monomer (b1) in the monomer mixture is 10-60 mass% and in the emulsion resin formation step, after the polymerization rate of the monomer mixture is in the range of 45-90%, a surfactant is added in a plurality of times.SELECTED DRAWING: None
