Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device capable of effectively suppressing the temperature rise of a non-passage part, even when a small-size transfer material passes through, while ensuring sufficient energy saving performance, yet costs can be kept low and to provide an image forming apparatus.SOLUTION: The fixing device includes a fixing belt, a pressure member which is rotated in contact with the outside of the fixing belt, a pad member which comes into contact with the inside of the fixing belt and comes into pressure contact with the pressure member through the fixing belt, to form a fixing nip part, and a heating member which heats the fixing belt. The pad member includes a low heat conduction layer, a high heat conduction layer having heat conductivity higher than that of the low heat conduction layer, and further a switching mechanism which selectively switches the pad member between a first position where the surface of the low heat conduction layer comes into contact with the inside of the fixing belt and a second position where the surface of the high heat conduction layer comes into contact with the inside of the fixing belt. The switching mechanism at least switches the pad member to the second position during a printing operation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
