To provide a negative electrode active substance for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which is high in the stability to an aqueous slurry, and has a high capacity and good cycle characteristics and a satisfactory initial efficiency.SOLUTION: A negative electrode active substance for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprises a negative electrode active substance particles. The negative electrode active substance particles include silicon compound particles containing a silicon compound (SiO, where 0.5≤x≤1.6). The silicon compound particles include a Li compound. The silicon compound particles are at least partially covered with a carbon material. The surface of the silicon compound particles or the surface of the carbon material, or each of them is partially covered with a layer including a compound having a silyl group.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
