Abstract:
To constitute an improved absolute encoder.SOLUTION: According to the present invention, an absolute position encoder comprises a scale and a detector overlapping the scale. The scale includes a cyclic pattern of wavelength Wf and a code pattern of bit length Wcode. The detector includes a set of cyclic pattern detectors and M sets of code pattern detectors. M is 2 or greater. Wcode is larger than Wf and smaller than or equal to M×Wf. The set of cyclic pattern detectors is arranged at array positions along the direction of a measurement axis. Thus, when the set of cyclic pattern detectors moves by a distance equal to contiguous array intervals (each array interval being Wf or smaller) as the code pattern moves in a single direction, they are aligned at contiguous array positions. Since an absolute position is determined on the basis of each of M sets of code detector signals and a spatial cyclic signal obtained by a cyclic pattern detection element, signal processing is performed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
