To provide a water-based coating composition containing a cellulose nanofiber that can give a film having high water resistance even under a high humidity.SOLUTION: The present invention provides a water-based coating composition containing a modified cellulose nanofiber, a polyvalent amine, and an aqueous solvent, wherein, some hydroxy groups in the modified cellulose nanofiber are modified by an oxidation or substitution reaction, and a substituent introduced by modification contains a structure represented by formula (1): -COONRRRH (where, R, Rand Reach represent H or a substituent constituting a monoamine).SELECTED DRAWING: None
