Abstract:
To provide an internal combustion engine and a control method for the internal combustion engine capable of determining the necessity of cleaning of an EGR cooler at appropriate timing without being affected by an unexpected increase/decrease of NOx.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine includes: an EGR line G2 for recirculating part of exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine body 12 to the internal combustion engine body 12 as combustion gas; and an EGR cooler 20 provided in the EGR line G2 and cooling exhaust gas by using cooling water. The internal combustion engine further includes a control section for determining the necessity of cleaning of the EGR cooler 20 by comparing estimated NOx discharge amount determined from an operating state of the internal combustion engine body 12 with standard NOx discharge amount obtained beforehand.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
