Abstract:
To provide a passive lubrication system for a gas turbine engine gearbox.SOLUTION: A gearbox assembly (40) for a gas turbine engine used in an aircraft having passive lubrication capabilities during wind milling includes a gearbox housing (44), a gear train assembly (50) housed within the housing, a lubricant (46) in the housing for lubricating the gear train assembly, and a first scavenge port (48) formed in the housing. The scavenge port is changeable between an open position and a closed position. Further, the scavenge port remains in the open position during normal operation of the engine to allow the lubricant to drain from the housing. Upon occurrence of a loss of lubricant pressure in the assembly, the scavenge port is changed to the closed position to trap at least a portion of the lubricant in the housing. Thus, the trapped lubricant provides passive lubrication to the assembly during the loss of lubricant pressure.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
