Abstract:
To provide a barrier membrane for biofuel cells operating in a hydrophilic environment under mild conditions; to provide a barrier membrane for biofuel cells capable of suppressing permeation of electrode active substances, such as mediators, to the minimum while having good proton conductivity; to provide a barrier membrane capable of preventing a decrease in catalytic activity of a biocatalyst, such as an enzyme, that is used as an electrode catalyst so that the biocatalyst can maintain its catalytic activity stably for a long term; and to provide a biofuel cell having high generation efficiency and long-term durability.SOLUTION: There are provided: a barrier membrane for biofuel cells that include a biocatalyst as an electrode catalyst, the barrier membrane comprising a composite compound including at least one inorganic compound selected from among a silicic acid compound, a tungsten oxide compound, and a zirconium oxide compound, and at least one organic compound with proton conductivity selected from among polyvinyl alcohol, an organic compound having a sulfonic acid group, and an organic compound having a secondary amine structure; a method for producing a barrier membrane; and a biofuel cell.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
