Abstract:
PURPOSE:To discriminate characters with a high precision by generating and using a similar character discriminating window for the purpose of detecting a subtle difference in the case of a discriminating object fundamental character having similar characters at the time of character discrimination. CONSTITUTION:Information of an input object character pattern 12 is binarized by a picture element sensor 1 and is stored in a picture memory 3. A CPU 10 generates a thicker/thinner pattern based on the picture in the memory 3 and stores it in a dictionary memory I 5 and registers the character after generation in a memory 4, and all required characters are registered. Based on the registered character, the CPU 10 generates a window pattern for discrimination and stores it in a dictionary memory II 6 when a similar character exists. At the time of discrimination, the CPU 10 reads out the picture in the memory 3 and successively compares it with patterns in the dictionary 5 by a matching circuit 8 and counts mismatching picture elements by a picture element counter 9, and the pertinent pattern is taken as an unknown pattern candidate when the counted value is smaller than a limit value. When plural candidates will be obtained, windows for discrimination of similar characters are successively read out from the dictionary and are compared by the circuit 8 to determine a true pattern.
