Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a triphenylmethane dye corresponding to a triphenyl-methane compd. in a high yield by electrolytically oxidizing the triphenylmethane compd. (leuco body) contg. no sulfonic acid group represented by a specified formula in the presence of an acid. CONSTITUTION:A triphenylmethane compd. represented by formula I is electrolytically oxidized with a supporting electrolyte such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid preferably at pH1-4. A reaction solvent used may be water or methanol. When the electrolytic oxidation is carried out in an electrolytic cell fitted with a diaphragm, lower alcohol such as methanol, preferably a lower alcohol solvent contg. <=50wt.% water is used. The quantity of electricity required to electrolyze the compd. is 3-5F/mol. A triphenylmethane dye represented by formula II is obtd. in such a high yield as 96%. The compd. represented by the formula I may be a leuco body represented by formula III and the dye represented by the formula II may be a hydroxyl body represented by formula IV.
