Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prolong charge and discharge cycle life stably for a long time by forming an oxygen fixing layer, having a main component of cobalthydroxide powder, on the surface of a negative electrode using a hydrogen occluding alloy. CONSTITUTION:An oxygen fixing layer 4, having a main component of cobalthydroxide powder, is provided on the surface of a negative electrode 1 using hydrogen-occlusion alloy 3. The oxygen fixing layer absorbs oxygen, generated from a nickel positive electrode, in the early stage of a cycle. Consequently oxidation, proceeding in the inside of the hydrogen occlusion alloy 3, can be restrained with the oxygen fixing layer 4. This permits the forming of a discharge reserve on the negative electrode without elecrochemically pre- charging, and furthermore the improvement of the negative electrode with the oxide layer of the oxygen fixing layer 4.
