Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain multilayer emulsion particles excellent in oil absorption and gas permeability and having intact hiding power and whiteness, which are required of an organic pigment. CONSTITUTION:A vinyl monomer (a) containing 5-80wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid is emulsion-polymerized to obtain a polymer (A). A vinyl monomer (b) in an amount up to 10 times by weight the amount of the polymer (A) is added to the emulsion at such a rate that the amount of the monomer (b) added per hr is at least 3 times by weight the amount of the polymer (A). Thus, the monomer (b) is polymerized in the presence of particles of the polymer (A) to form a polymer (B). The resulting particles are treated with a base to neutralize and swell the polymer (A). Thereto is added a vinyl monomer (C) in an amount at least 20 times by weight the sum of the polymers (A) and (B). The monomer (C) is emulsion-polymerized, thereby giving the title particles. The particle, in a dry state, has at least one through hole extending through the inner part of the particle. In has a particle diameter of 0.1-5.0mum, preferably 0.1-1.2mum. The particles are used for a resin composition for the coating of paper, etc., or as an ingredient for a thermal recording material.
