Abstract:
PURPOSE:To suppress oxidization of sulfur compd. such as SO2 in exhaust gas to sulfuric acid and to prevent the deterioration of catalyst and the corrosion of a device caused by sulfuric acid. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst (normal oxidization catalyst) for the combustion of carbon fine particles is brought into contact with exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine using sulfur-contg. fuel in the presence of hydrocarbons or oxygen-contg. org. compds. Since hydrocarbons or oxygen-contg. org. compds. are preferentially oxidized by the oxidization catalyst, SO2 is not oxidized but released as it is. Thus, no sulfuric acid is produced to prolong the life of the catalyst and the device.
