Abstract:
PURPOSE: To decrease self-discharge and increase gas absorbing performance at high temperature of a nickel-hydrogen storage battery. CONSTITUTION: A separator is prepared by producing a nonwoven fabric with a first fiber layer made of polyolefin synthetic resin, having a fiber diameter of 3μm or less and a second fiber layer made of polyolefin synthetic resin, having a fiber diameter of 15μm or more, then graft-polymerizing the nonwoven fabric with a hydrophilic vinyl monomer. The separator is arranged so that the first fiber layer is brought into contact with a nickel positive electrode and the second fiber layer is brought into contact with a hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode. The surface of the nickel positive electrode is covered with an electrolyte by the first fiber layer and hydrogen released from the negative electrode is difficult to reach the positive electrode to decease self- discharge. Since spaces of fibers are formed on the hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode by the second fiber layer, permeability of oxygen is increased to increase gas absorbing performance.
