To provide a polymer electrolyte fuel cell advantageous for achieving further improvement in gaseous diffusion and drainage capability in the downstream region of a gaseous diffusion layer, a gaseous diffusion layer for the polymer electrolyte fuel cell, and a manufacturing method for a solid-state polymer electrolyte type gaseous diffusion layer thereof.
The fuel cell has a polymer electrolyte membrane, a fuel electrode which is provided in one side of the thickness direction of the polymer electrolyte membrane and to which fuel gas is supplied, and an oxidizer electrode which is provided in the other side of the thickness direction of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane and to which oxidizer gas is supplied. Either one or both of the fuel electrode and the oxidizer electrode has or have gaseous diffusion layer or layers causing a gas to diffuse as well as having an electrical conductivity. The gas permeability in the downstream region of the gaseous diffusion layer is set at relatively larger value than that of upstream of the gaseous diffusion layer. The gaseous diffusion layer is configured to form an aggregate in which carbon staple fibers having conductivity are aggregated in sheet shape as an substrate.
