Abstract:
A system for detecting and damping vibrations of machine (e.g. printer) components, mechanical devices, buildings, or large structures has a plurality of light beam detectors (22) for generating signals corresponding to a reference of a light beam 32 from a source (30) position. The light beam detectors (22) are partially transparent to allow passage of the light beam (32) through the detector (22), permitting multiple detectors to use the same reference light beam. The detectors (22) are attached to vibration susceptible structural elements (12), with detected movement of the light beam with respect to the partially transparent light beam detector corresponding to movement of the vibration susceptible structural element being passed to a detection control unit (34). Motion control units (38) connected to the detectors (22) can be used to control or damp detected vibrations in real-time.
