To provide a melting method by which titanium-containing steel in which Ti carbosulfides are dispersed, and having satisfactory machinability can be melted with a high Ti yield and satisfactory controllability of the Ti content.
The melting method uses titanium-containing steel containing 0.1 to 0.6% C, 0.1 to 1.5% Si, 0.4 to 2.0% Mn, 0.04 to 0.25% Ti, 0.01 to 0.2% S, 0.0005 to 0.10% Al and ≤0.005% T.O, and the balance Fe with impurities. The Si and Al contents (%) in the molten steel satisfy the relation expressed by Si+10Al≥0.2. CaO, MgO and SiO2 contents (%) in slag in a ladle satisfy the relation expressed by 2.3≤(CaO+MgO)/SiO2≤5.0. The TiO2 content is controlled to 2 to 30%, and the TiO2 content (%) and the Ti content (%) are controlled so as to satisfy the relation expressed by 50≤TiO2/Ti. The above control is performed preferably by adding an oxide containing TiO2 as a slag making agent to the slag in the ladle.
