To provide a refining method capable of refining efficiently and on an industrial scale an aluminum containing Fe, Si, peritectic elements and other inevitably contained elements as impurities.
The method for refining the aluminum or an aluminum alloy is composed of a crystal packing step (A) where molten metal is housed in a holding vessel, then the vicinity of the upper part of the holding vessel is cooled to crystalize aluminum primary crystals, then the primary crystals are peeled off by a physical means and allowed to deposit at the lower part of the holding vessel, then the deposited primary crystals are made to press uniformly over the whole surface of the inner-peripheral cross section of the holding vessel to perform crystal growth and also to pack up the crystals compactly into the holding vessel, and a nonperitectic substance discharging step (B) where residual impurities existing in a mother liquor and residual impurities existing in the gap of aluminum crystals are separated in the state of the molten metal from the holding vessel packing the crystals and discharged from the holding vessel.
