To prevent deterioration of the fuel efficiency during the reproduction process of a filter and to reduce the time for making the exhaust temperature and the engine torque converge on targets.
The exhaust emission control device of an engine has the filter 4 for collecting particulates in an exhaust pathway 3. The exhaust emission control device also comprises a reproduction processing means 11 for reproducing the filter by increasing the exhaust temperature by the post injection in the expansion step when the filter should be reproduced, a determining means 11 for determining whether the temperature of the filter is at or out of a target temperature when the engine torque varies during the filter reproduction process, and a post injection control means 11 for controlling the post injection so that the temperature of the filter is at the target temperature while inhibiting the variation of the engine torque if the engine torque varies and the temperature of the filter is out of the target temperature based on the result of the determination.
