To provide a low-cost organic EL element doing without a processing on a sealing substrate and capable of inhibiting infiltration of water from the outside.
The organic EL element comprises matrix luminous pixels 4 each consisting of an organic EL pixel and a thin-film transistor 14 driving the pixel, a luminous pixel driving circuit 6 driving the luminous pixels 4, an organic EL element substrate 7 equipped with a connecting part 13 electrically connecting the luminous pixels 4 with the luminous pixel driving circuit 6, and the sealing substrate 8 facing a luminous pixel forming face the organic EL element substrate 7, and containing the luminous pixels 4, the luminous pixel driving circuit 6, and the connecting part in an airtight state by jointing the organic EL element substrate 7 and the sealing substrate 8 with a metal jointing part 9 at their outer periphery with a cathode 3 as a transparent electrode and the sealing substrate 8 as a transparent substrate, and with emission light led outside through the cathode 3 and the sealing substrate 8. In the organic EL element, a through-hole 12 is formed at the organic EL element substrate 7 so that the luminous pixel driving circuit 6 and an outside circuit 10 can be electrically connected by an outside connecting part 11.
