To prevent degradation of exhaust emission catalyst during performing of fuel cut and to suppress influence of explosion combustion gas occurring just after performing fuel cut on an engine or the like, in the internal combustion engine having variable valve system.
This internal combustion engine comprises the variable valve system capable of varying opening/closing characteristic of an exhaust valve in each cylinder of the internal combustion engine, and a fuel supply stopping means for stopping the supply of the fuel to the internal combustion engine in a predetermined operation state. The internal combustion engine also comprises an exhaust valve controlling means that, when the supply of the fuel to the internal combustion engine is stopped by the fuel supply stopping means, discharges to an exhaust gas pipe side at least part of combustion gas generated by explosion and combustion of the fuel injected before the supply stop of the fuel in an explosion stroke of each cylinder after the fuel supply stop, and then closes and stops the exhaust valve of each cylinder via the adjustable valve mechanism.
