To provide a display device capable of miniaturizing the size of a virtual image display means, especially the size in the light emission direction, while keeping an appearance having rich solidity.

This display device has a constitution wherein a background pattern 13 on a background plate 12 for forming a virtual image K is formed as a two-dimensional image of a solid irradiated with light from the oblique upside, and the virtual image K is viewed to be on the back of a gradation 21, numerals 22 and characters 23 which are a display design on a dial plate 2 in the viewing direction. Therefore, while emphasizing the solidity of the appearance of the virtual image K, the size in the transmission illumination light direction (the vertical direction in the figure) of the background pattern 13 can be reduced. In addition, since the gradation 21, the numerals 22 and a pointer 3 can be viewed on the furthermore front side than the virtual image K of the background panel 13, as if floating in the air, a combination meter 1 having a fresh appearance can be provided.
