To prevent false detection by a sheet detecting sensor by setting a detecting timing for existence of the next sheets at the time of feeding tab sheets at a timing different from the feeding timing of sheets such as plain sheets without tabs.
Existence of the next sheet is detected at detecting timing when time t1 passes from sheet feed action initiation time of the previous sheet in a sheet tray in which plain sheets are accommodated. In a sheet tray in which the tab sheets are accommodated, existence of the next sheet is detected at detecting timing when time t2 passes from the sheet feed action initiation time of the previous sheet. The time t1 is from the initiation timing of the sheet feed action until the time when a rear end of the sheet in a standard size properly fed in a sheet feed direction completely passes a detection position of a sheet detection sensor, which is set as short as possible. The time t2 is from the initiation timing of the sheet feed action until the time when a rearward protruded tab of the properly fed tab sheets completely passes the detection position of the sheet feed detection sensor in the sheet feed direction, which is set as short as possible.
