To obtain a detergent composition free of a characteristic smell, safe, simple to handle, and in addition, having an effect on soiling equivalent or superior to conventional technique even under feeble light sources, such as fluorescent lamp that is common lighting.
This detergent composition contains (a) a photocatalyst, (b) a compound containing a metal ion whose reduction potential is nobler than the conduction band potential of the photocatalyst, and capable of existing stably in a neutral region, and (c) at least one peroxide selected from the group consisting of peroxides that receive an electron to generate a radical in an aqueous solution and peroxides that generate hydrogen peroxide. A washing method using this detergent composition is also provided, wherein visible light is irradiated to produce the detergent action.
