Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase intake air volume to improve output by controlling, under medium to low load condition of an internal combustion engine, at least one of intake valve opening/ closing actions characteristic changing mechanism, intake valve opening/closing timing changing mechanism, and intake tuning characteristics changing mechanism in the direction in which intake air charging efficiency is lowered. SOLUTION: A valve characteristics switching mechanism 30 is provided between an intake cam shaft 5 and an intake valve 10 for switching the valve lifting and valve opening timing. Further, a valve phase variable mechanism 40 is provided at an end portion of the intake cam shaft 5 for advancing/delaying intake valve opening/closing timing continuously. In addition, an intake pipe length changing mechanism serving as an intake tuning characteristics changing mechanism is applied to an intake manifold. During operation of an internal combustion engine, in the high-speed operation region under medium to low load condition, the valve characteristics switching mechanism 30 is set to low-speed characteristics to suppress intake air volume, and the valve phase variable mechanism 40 is set to an advancing side to increase internal EGR. Further, the intake pipe length changing mechanism is set to the low speed characteristics so that intake pulsation and intake completion are not tuned to decrease charging efficiency.
