To provide a controller of an internal combustion engine capable of suppressing the deterioration of fuel economy due to the continued control of the increasing temperature of a catalyst over a long period by rapidly completing the regeneration of the filter even under such a condition that idle operation is frequently performed under the control of the increasing temperature of the catalyst for regenerating the filter.
When the idle operation is frequently performed under the control of the increasing temperature of the catalyst for regenerating the filter and a catalyst floor temperature becomes difficult to rise, the burning of PM deposited in an exhaust system is not advanced and it takes much time for the filter to be regenerated and the fuel economy of the internal combustion engine 10 may be deteriorated. However, when the deposited amount of PM is determined to be increased during the control of the increasing temperature of the catalyst, an exhaust temperature raising control is performed for raising exhaust gas temperatures during the idle operation of the internal combustion engine 10. By the execution of that control. the catalyst floor temperature can be held at a high value even under the idle operation, and a time for completing the regeneration of the filter is reduced, and further the deterioration of the fuel economy of the internal combustion engine 10 can be suppressed.
