To provide a separator material in which a nonwoven fabric is homogeneously hydrophilized up to the surface of fibers existing inside the nonwoven fabric by treating the nonwoven fabric including extra-fine fibers by batch type multistage treatment wherein the nonwoven fabric is reacted with a sulfurous acid containing gas under reduced pressure, then reacted with a fluorine containing gas in a state that the sulfurous acid containing gas still remains.

This separator material is composed of the nonwoven fabric including the extra-fine fibers with a fiber diameter of 4 μm or less, in which the ratio (F/C) of the number of fluorine atoms (F) with respect to that of carbon atoms (C) which is measured by using an electron spectroscopy for a chemical analysis (ESCA) at an X-ray take out angle of 45° is within a range of 1×10-2or more and 20×10-2or less, wherein that (1) the ratio (S/C)Eof the number of sulfur atoms (S) with respect to that of the carbon atoms (C) measured by using ESCA at an X-ray take out angle of 45 degrees is 1×10-2or more and 10×10-2or less, (2) the ratio (S/C)Bof the numbers of the sulfur atoms (S) with respect to that of the carbon atoms (C) measured by a flask combustion method is within a range of 0.1×10-3or more and 0.5×10-3or less, and (3) the ratio [(S/C)E/(S/C)B] of the (S/C)Ewith respect to the (S/C)Bis within a range of 100 or more and 250 or less is satisfied.
