To provide a fuel cell generator capable of safely stopping the device without damage, even if normal purge operation of the fuel cell generator is disabled in stopping operation of the fuel cell generator and to provide its operation method.
In this fuel cell generator 100 and its operation method, a fuel cell 1 for generating power using fuel, purging air supply means 6 for purging a flow passage of the fuel, and non-air fluid supply means 3 are provided. For stopping the generator, remainder of the fuel for at least a part of the flow passage of the fuel is purged using the non-air fluid, and then remaining non-air fluid is purged using the purging air. A purge operation determining means 8 is provided for determining whether the supply of the non-air fluid is abnormal or not. If the supply of the non-air fluid is determined abnormal, the purge using the purging air is not performed.
