To provide a material and a method for treating iron-containing acidic waste water which can efficiently remove hazardous heavy metals, such as iron and arsenic, from the iron-containing acidic waste water.
The iron-containing acidic waste water treating material is made by carrying iron-oxidizing bacteria on an inorganic material containing at least one of alkaline earth metal and/or alkali metal silicate among mineral fiber, steel slag, and ferronickel slag, and is at least one kind of a product where the iron-oxidizing bacteria is stuck and carried onto the inorganic material, a mixture of the inorganic material and a biomat containing the iron-oxidizing bacteria, and a mixture of the inorganic material and soil containing the iron-oxidizing bacteria. In the iron-containing acidic waste water treating method, the iron-containing acidic waste water in which divalent iron ions are contained is brought into contact with the iron-containing acidic waste water treating material. A part where the iron-containing acidic waste water is treated is sprayed with the waste water treating material, equipped with a packed member in which the waste water treating material is packed, or subjected to waste water treating material spraying application.
