To provide an image forming apparatus in which the deficiency of image density which is caused when toner scattered to a non-image part of a transfer body due to transfer scattering is reversely transferred, increase in cost of the apparatus are avoided, and the transfer scattering is suppressed.
A nip downstream roller 33, which comes into contact with the back surface of an intermediate transfer belt 31, is disposed on the downstream side in the belt moving direction from a primary transfer nip where a photoreceptor 1 as the image carrier, and the intermediate transfer belt 31 as a transfer body are brought into pressing contact with each other. To the nip downstream roller 33, a nip downstream bias which has the same polarity as the polarity of toner charging and has such a small value as not to reversely transfer the toner attached to the non-image part of the intermediate transfer belt 31 passing through the primary transfer nip is applied.
