To provide an embossing method of a sheet metal 1 by which a sharp pattern with the feeling of deep carving can be designed and also the generation of the folding of the sheet and the deformation of the pattern is prevented.

The embossing method by which the sheet metal 1, on which a projecting and recessing pattern 2 is finally formed, is divided into two or three rows and the projecting and recessing pattern 2 is stepwisely formed by press-forming row by row with a lower die and an upper die on which the projecting and recessing patterns 2a corresponding to respective rows is provided. The method comprises a first stage where embossing is performed by forming the projecting and recessing pattern 2 on a row on one side or the middle row of the sheet metal 1, a second stage where embossing is performed by positioning the metallic sheet 1 so as to make the lower die coincide with the projecting and recessing pattern 2 of embossed rows between the upper die and the lower die on which the projecting and recessing pattern 2 corresponding to the projecting and recessing pattern 2 of the embossed row is formed, and suceesively by forming the projecting and recessing pattern 2 in the row on the other side or both sides while holding the projecting and recessing pattern 2 of the embossed row with the positioned lower die and the upper die.
