To provide a display apparatus for enhancing the quality of displaying a stereoscopic image.
First, when a first light source is lighted to cause emission of light from a right face of a first light guide plate 2, a right eye image light emitted from a right face of a liquid crystal display panel 1 transmits through a second light guide plate 3 and is reflected in a first reflection plate 4 and observed by a right eye of a viewer via a right eye transparent part 7 of a light shield plate 6. In this case, no left eye image light is produced. On the other hand, when a second light source is lighted to cause the emission of light from a left face of a second light guide plate 3, a left eye image light emitted from a left face of the liquid crystal display panel 1 transmits through a first light guide plate 2 and is reflected in a second reflection plate 5 and observed by a left eye of the viewer via a left eye transparent part 8 of the light shield plate 6. In this case, no right eye image light is produced. Then an after-image phenomenon and a stereoscopic vision phenomenon by the parallax of both eyes provide a display of a stereoscopic image. The use of a screen in place of the light shield plate 6 enables a display of a magnified image.
