Abstract:
The alcoholic component in the Karl Fischer reagent for the determination of water content is ethanol. The reagent also contains a stabilizing and/or activating compound. This compound is one or more salts of an inorganic or organic acid with an inorganic or organic base. The acid may be HCl, H2SO4, H2SO3, ethyl sulfuric acid, ethyl sulfurous acid, a carboxylic acid and this may be combined with an organic amine, a quaternary ammonium compound or an inorganic cation. The base may also be pyridine, morpholine, imidazole, diethanolamine or a mixture of these.
