To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus capable of performing motion picture thumbnail display of a plurality of video blocks even while photographing video frames.
A recording apparatus 20 comprises a first storage medium 21 and a second storage medium 23. A control apparatus 10 comprises a CPU 11 which time-sequentially stores video frames on the first storage medium 21, determines a plurality of starting point video frames which become starting points of motion picture thumbnail, based on a plurality of predetermined timings, out of the video frames stored on the first storage medium 21, divides the video data starting from the determined starting point video frames into groups by starting points as stream image data of a predetermined amount for motion picture thumbnail display and stores the respective video data; and a compositing means 19 for performing the thumbnail display of the stream image data read from the second storage medium 23 on one and the same picture of a display device 30.
