To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of lighting a plurality of discharge lamps having a rated power, capable of lighting the discharge lamps at the rated power by automatically discriminating the rated power thereof, capable of discriminating load even at the improvement of the characteristics of the lamps.
The device is provided with a first period of driving a discharge lamp at nearly a constant lamp current from starting, a second period of driving the discharge lamp at nearly a constant lamp power W1a1, and a third period of driving the discharge lamp at another nearly constant lamp power W1a2. Kinds of discharge lamps are detected by changing rate of characteristic value of the discharge lamps at the first period, the second and the third periods are realized by switching target lamp power for driving the discharge lamps, the time of driving the discharge lamps at the second and the third periods is to be until the characteristics values of the discharge lamps are nearly stabilized, and the discharge lamp characteristics values are detected at the end of the second and the third periods to light the discharge lamps at given lamp power outputs in accordance with the detected results.
