To provide a method for recovering zinc from zinc-containing dust by which crude zinc oxide reduced in the rate of inclusion of volatile impurities can be stably recovered in high yield from the zinc-containing dust from ironworks, while preventing the formation of a dam ring.
The zinc-containing dust from ironworks is melted in a shaft type melting furnace 1 to prepare hot metal. The resultant dust in melting furnace exit side is water-washed in a scrubber 3 and introduced into a rotary kiln 2, where reduction roasting is performed at 907 to 1,023°C to volatilize zinc and recover it in the form of crude zinc oxide. The whole quantity of a residue contained a zinc component discharged from the rotary kiln 2 is returned to the melting furnace 1 to undergo remelting, and the whole quantity of the zinc component is eventually recovered in the course of circulation between the melting furnace 1 and the rotary kiln 2. Because the reduction roasting is performed at low temperature, no dam ring is formed in the rotary kiln 2.
