To provide a means precisely determining the end of a life of a discharge lamp lighting device and luminaire.
This luminaire is provided with a discharge lamp lighting part 1, which turns on a discharge lamp La and can control supply power to the discharge lamp La, an illuminance sensor S1 detecting illuminance of the luminaire K, a comparator CP1 comparing an output from the illuminance sensor S1 with a reference value, and a lighting time timer part TM1 measuring a period during which the output from the illuminance sensor S1 exceeds the reference value. The end of a service life of the discharge lamp lighting part 1 is detected according to an integrated value of the lighting time timer part TM1. A human detection sensor may be used instead of the illuminance sensor S1.
