To properly adapt to the secular change of engine characteristics and the change of operating environment when an ignition timing is controlled and suppress the delay of the control in an ignition timing control device of an internal combustion engine.
This control device comprises a feed-forward controller 56 for calculating the ignition timing according to an ignition timing model, a feedback controller 58 for correcting the ignition timing to be near an MBT, and an ignition timing model learning means 62 which learns the ignition timing after the feedback correction and updates ignition timing model parameter vectors according to a calculation method in which the Kalman filter theory is used. A covariance calculation means 72 calculates the covariance matrix of differential vectors between the ignition timing model parameter vectors and their averaged value. The ignition timing model learning means 62 updates the ignition timing model parameter vectors by using the covariance matrixes of the differential vectors. A deterioration determination means 74 determines the deterioration of the internal combustion engine according to the differential vectors.
