To provide a character input device capable of exactly and efficiently inputting characters by using speech recognition and Japanese syllabary input operation.

The character input device 10 comprises a speech input device 20 which inputs a speech, a speech recognizer 24 which recognizes the characters or character strings from the input speech input by the speech input device 20, a touch panel display 28 which displays the characters of the Japanese syllabary, and permits the assigned input of each of the characters of the displayed Japanese syllabary, and a controller 26 which controls the touch panel display 28 in such a manner that the character corresponding to each of the characters or the characters constituting character strings recognized by the speech recognizer 24 among the characters of the Japanese syllabary displayed on the touch panel display 28.
