To provide a catalyst body for purifying exhaust gas capable of reducing costs while enhancing catalytic activity by reducing the amount of a catalyst metal which does not effectively operate in purification of exhaust gas.
A coating layer comprising inorganic oxide particles is formed on cell walls 4 of a honeycomb-like catalyst carrier 2, vapor of the catalytically active metal is condensed in an inert gas and cluster fine particles of the catalytically active metal are allowed to come into collision with the catalyst carrier by an inert gas flow. Thereby, the catalytically active metal is deposited on the surface layer part of the coating layer as the cluster fine particles to form catalyst layers 5.
