To eliminate an effect on a read image due to a shadow formed by irregularities when reading the image of the object having irregularities.

A scanning unit 10 includes two lamps 3, 4 where the lamps 3, 4 are disposed on an upstream side and downstream side respectively in a moving direction of the scanning unit 10. When a book is placed on a placement table 2, the irregularities are formed on a filed portion. When the scanning unit 10 scans the filed portion, a light volume of the downstream side lamp 3 first increases, and that of the upstream side lamp 4 decreases while that of the entire lamp is maintained constant. Thereafter, the light volume of the upstream side lamp 3 increases, and that of the downstream side lamp 4 decreases. The light volume reflected from the filed portion increases, and the luminance of the read image increases, so that the shadow image becomes light.
