To provide a method/apparatus for supporting diagnosis to provide effective and quantitative diagnostic information to a doctor for objectively diagnosing the knee joint.
Noise of X-ray image data is removed; a determination whether a left leg or right leg is made, and a reference region for diagnosing the knee joint is set. A region where cartilage exists is extracted in a clearance between the femur and the tibia. Then, the area of the region is output to provide objective/quantitative determination materials contributing to the diagnosis of the gonarthrosis. Similarly, the side faces of the femur and the tibia are detected to provide central curves of the side faces and regression lines of the central curves. The regression lines are regarded as the femoral axis and the tibial axis, and an angle formed thereby is found to calculate FTA (Femorotibial Angle). This method can thus provide the objective determination materials contributing to the diagnosis of the gonarthrosis.
